KUUMBA, meaning “creativity” in Swahili, is Toronto’s largest and longest-running Black Futures Month festival, celebrating the rich histories, achievements and creative brilliance of Black communities across North America.
Each February, Harbourfront Centre, brings together artists, thinkers and performers for a month-long showcase of music, dance, theatre, literature, comedy, wellness programming and family-friendly events.
Guided by this year’s theme, Sounds of Blackness, KUUMBA 2026 amplifies Afro-Caribbean and Canadian voices through electrifying performances, masterclasses and community conversations. The festival provides a vibrant space for reflection, celebration, and future-focused dialogue, inviting audiences to connect, learn, and experience the dynamic range of Black cultural expression.
The third edition of KUUMBA 365 celebrates Black culture through sound, featuring original works by leading musicians.
In partnership with The Power Plant, three musicians are invited to respond to this season’s exhibitions, creating new compositions that bridge the worlds of visual art and music. Their creative process is captured through interviews and video, culminating in a live performance.
Previous editions have explored dance (2025) and spoken word (2024).
