The business events industry has been treading in uncharted waters since 2020. After years of being flexible and agile in ever-changing circumstances, convention facilities, meeting venues, planners and suppliers in Toronto are looking to the future. And we are happy to say that glimmers of hope do exist and to share some good news (finally!).

In 2023 the Metro Toronto Convention Centre (MTCC) is set to host more citywide conventions than in most pre-pandemic years. While this is indeed great news for the region and the city, the strong booking calendar signals the potential for a positive recovery for the industry as a whole.

Highlights of the upcoming year include:

  • 19 citywide conventions
  • Nine citywide from the U.S. (six of which are coming to Toronto for the first time)
  • Six International citywide
  • Four Canadian citywide

The citywide conventions that are set to take place at the MTCC in 2023 will generate an estimated $219 million in direct spending economic impact and will provide key support for local restaurants, hotels, attractions, tourism operators and more. In a typical year, the MTCC generates approximately half a billion in economic impact for the region and sustains over 5,900 hospitality jobs.

Our industry, our team, and our partners have worked tirelessly over the past two years to recover and move forward successfully. We are very pleased to report that our 2023 booking calendar signals the potential for a strong recovery and bright future for the business events industry and our facility.

Over the last two years with business slowed due to capacity restrictions, our team did not rest on its laurels having served as a courtroom, a flu vaccination clinic and Ontario's first and largest COVID-19 vaccination clinic. As well, the team has continued in its efforts to fight hunger in Toronto having donated over 340,000 meals to local food rescue organizations, including the Toronto District School Board’s (TDSB) Student Nutrition Program and the Daily Bread Food Bank.

With the welcome return of business, our focus now turns to clients and providing them with the best of Toronto and Ontario while they are here. To that end, the centre recently introduced a new catering menu featuring 100% locally sourced wine and craft beer options showcasing a continued commitment to supporting local businesses.
