Film. Food. Sports. Shopping. Autumn is an incredible time to explore everything Toronto has to offer.
Shhh: don’t tell anyone, but fall is peak Toronto. Canada’s culture capital beckons with non-stop arts events, stellar shopping, big league sports, and—best of all—mild weather that’s perfect for exploring the city on foot or wheels.
Here’s why you should plan weekend trips to Toronto this September, October, and November.
1. It’s showtime at TIFF
Go stargazing at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF, September 5–15, 2024). Now in its 49th year, the 2024 lineup includes films from 25 countries, with world premieres and gala screenings.
Keep an eye out for Pharrell Williams, Amy Adams, Cate Blanchett, and Bruce Springsteen, who are all expected to walk the red carpet.
2. Perfect walking and cycling weather
Toronto’s fall weather starts warm in September, cooling over October and November.
Expect September highs of 22°C and lows of 13°C. (Early in the month, visitors may still be treated to hot days where the beach beckons.)
October highs of 14°C and lows of 8°C make long walks and autumn leaf viewing comfortable, while November brings the chill (think: highs of 8°C and lows around 2°C)—but nothing your fashionable layers can’t handle.
3. Pumpkin spice latte season
If you’re a diehard for seasonal treats, Toronto is your place, and fall is your time! Sip and savour PSL at the city’s best cafes, where you can find sustainable coffee, secret patios, and yummy carbs.
4. Major league sports action
Home to the Raptors, Blue Jays, Maple Leafs, Argonauts and Toronto FC, Toronto is Canada’s major league sports HQ. Fall provides some overlap between leagues, so if you’re a mega fan, come to the 6ix for the ultimate multisport weekend getaway!
5. Harvest experiences and eats
Ontario’s harvest hits its peak summer through early fall. Go apple picking or pumpkin patch hopping. Visit a Toronto farmer’s market for field-grown produce and locally made delicacies (artisan cheese, anyone?). And fill your belly at these restaurants known for their field-to-table menus.
6. Fall festivals in Toronto
Looking for fall events in Toronto? We’ve got you covered. Fall draws world-class writers to the Toronto International Festival of Authors (September 19–29, 2024).
Ontario Culture Days (September 20–October 13, 2024), a multidisciplinary celebration of the arts, hosts multiple events in Toronto, including music, dance, gallery tours, film screenings, and neighbourhood festivals.
As the sun sets, visual arts, activations, and installations take over the city streets at the night-owl-friendly Nuit Blanche (October 5, 2024).
7. Fall’s the time to hit refresh
Kickstart a new routine with a wellness weekend complete with spa time and wellness activities like fitness classes, float therapy, saunas, ice bathing, and more. Or tack a dose of self-care onto your trip with a last-minute facial or relaxing massage.
8. Celebration-worthy restaurants
Celebrating an anniversary, birthday, or Thanksgiving with the fam? You’ll find appetizing options in Toronto’s restaurant scene. From MICHELIN-recognized dining to iconic local faves, plant-forward menus, bountiful brunches, and celebration-worthy splurges, it’s all here for you to devour.
9. Sweater weather means sweater shopping
Go shopping and build your wardrobe here! Canada’s fashion capital is the place to go for indie labels, luxury boutiques, bespoke tailors, vintage finds, and thrifting. No matter what your style is, you’re sure to find signature pieces to add to your rotation.
10. Spooky season is here!
