Overview

This modern 2000-seat theatre, built by the father and son producing team of David and Ed Mirvish, opened on May 26, 1993, with the Canadian premiere of Miss Saigon. Designed by architect Peter Smith, with an interior design by the (then up-and-coming) world renowned design firm Yabu Pushelberg, and featuring artwork by the brilliant Frank Stella, it was the first privately built, stand-alone theatre in North America in over 50 years and the first in Canada since the historic Royal Alexandra Theatre, (located just one block away), opened in 1907. The theatre has since become the premier home of classic and contemporary musical productions. For complete show information visit www.mirvish.com

  • AccessNow Verified Review: At the Princess of Wales Theatre, singular doors may be too narrow but during shows all double doors can be propped open making the entrance barrier free, with working buttons and two layer stanchions. There is minimal signage however the staff are very receptive to supporting guests with any needs and many staff are on site. There is currently no staff that communicates through ASL. There are several accessible options for seating on all levels and price points. Guests can remain in their mobility devices or have the option to transfer into theatre seats. Call the theatre beforehand/while purchasing tickets to ensure you will have the best experience and ensure access. Note: complimentary companion/support worker tickets are available on a show by show basis. The theatre welcomes service animals, and is a scent-free environment (although guests may still wear their own perfume beyond control). If you require a break at any time during the performance, the staff may provide you with a seat outside the theatre to watch the show from the TV screens. The theatre has two spacious gender neutral accessible washrooms with grab bars and barrier-free sinks at decent height. The general concourse and lounge space is very spacious with low lighting, however lighting and sound during performances will vary. The GalaPro System is available at this theatre. Lighting varies on a show by show basis, however the theatre does offer Sensory Friendly and Relaxed Environment performances on occasion. Visit the website for specific dates. There are lounges and bars on each floor that allow you to order, however there is no seating. Please note the bars are traditional bar height, which is quite tall for those seated or lower to the ground. Note: There are no braille menu options. This theatre is in a very busy area on King Street. St. Andrew Station is the closest accessible subway station and is a 10-minute stroll. There are minimal options for parking.
